College Bound Homeschoolers, Check out the College Board Website

I got this tip from a young lady that recently graduated from public school. I was inquiring at what age she started taking SAT II subject tests which are equivalent AP exams. Because my son is finishing his first high school math course and is starting college in the fall, I wanted him to take the corresponding standardized test to put in his homeschool portfolio which we are beginning to compile for college admissions. Her advice to me was to go to Collegeboard.com and sign up to get access to test dates and locations. She also informed me that the … Continue reading

Some Websites Homeschoolers Should Know About

Every once in awhile I have to take time to note new homeschooling resources. . .or at least resources that are new to me. Generally I like to place them in a theme, but I have recently discovered three very cool websites that I thought were worth mentioning. I hope you find them as useful as I have. Library Elf Most homeschoolers I know, use the library for at least part of their curriculum. I know that we rely heavily on library books to fill out our literature based curriculum. Not to mention the fact that most libraries have numerous … Continue reading

My Favorite Discount Online Homeschool Store

As a one income family with four kids, I’m sure you can do the math and figure I look for deals. As much as I love a good deal, I refuse to cut back on the quality of education I provide for my children. I am willing to cut back on bills and expenses as much as possible, however, cutting back on my kids’ education never occurred to me. My goal is to provide the best education possible. While, I understand that my budget will determine some of what I buy it should not rule what I buy. Therefore, I … Continue reading

I Almost Didn’t Homeschool Because I Felt Alone

When people find out that I homeschool my kids, it is common for people to say to me “I could never homeschool”. One reason or another always follows this statement. Many of these same reasons nearly kept me from homeschooling. This series of articles explains the reasons that I almost did not homeschool my children. This particular article tells the story of the first time I considered homeschooling and then changed my mind. We were living in New Orleans, which at the time was labeled THE worst school district in the nation. No one with two pennies to rub together … Continue reading

Answering Questions About California’s Now Infamous Court Case

Unless you’ve been homeschooling under a rock, you know that the Superior Court of California issued a ruling regarding one homeschool family. The wording of the ruling essentially declares homeschooling illegal. Now, it seems, that the whole homeschooling world is up in arms, ready to storm Capital Hill to reverse this great injustice. Just like in a game of telephone, though, as the story is retold again and again, the facts are getting more and more distorted. This is my attempt to answer some questions as I understand them. Why is the court ruling on homeschooling when this is an … Continue reading

Reading Incentive Programs

After discussing the accelerated reading program not available to homeschoolers yesterday, I decided to look for alternatives. Here are some websites I found that you can use the make sure your kids are getting the most out of their reading time. Funtrivia.com supplies thousands of cool ways for children to test themselves. The literature section (found under quiz categories) alone has 5,341 quizzes. There are 1206 “books for kids” quizzes. (There is however, a disproportionate number of Harry Potter quizzes.) Using the search function, I was able to find Little Women, Little House on the Prairie, Curious George, Dr. Seuss, … Continue reading

Building a Homeschool Library: The Classics (Part II)

Previously, we discussed why classic books are important. I will continue this article with how to start and compile your collection of classic books. Where do I find classic books? Shop around. You can find classic books in many places, but since they are going to be in your home library for some time, I recommend you get leather bound books in good to fair condition. When building your in-home library of classic books, you should check the thrift stores for leather bound books. This is going to be your best deals price-wise, though for me the dust is prohibitive. … Continue reading
